Beyond autocomplete: learning unfamiliar domains with agentic AI, then testing and shipping

GitHub Copilot and similar tools trained many of us to think of AI as autocomplete with superpowers: finish the line, suggest a function, draft a regex. That still matters. But the next shift is agentic workflows. Systems that can take broader goals, read across files, propose plans, run commands, and iterate. The risk is outsourcing judgment; the opportunity is using agents to compress exploration in domains you don’t yet understand, while you keep the goals, tradeoffs, and final say.

Here’s a practical frame: use AI to illuminate the unknown, run a planning session that includes your input, then test and deploy like you would for any serious change.

From “next token” to “next step”

Autocomplete is local: the model sees nearby context and continues. Agentic setups are goal-oriented: you describe an outcome (“refactor this module,” “add OAuth,” “why does this job fail in prod?”), and the system can search, summarize, propose steps, and sometimes execute them.

That difference matters when you’re new to a codebase, a stack, or a business domain. You don’t need the model to write perfect code on the first try; you need it to build a map: what files matter, what invariants exist, what could break.

Using AI to understand what you don’t know yet

When the domain is unknown, start with questions, not prompts:

  • “What are the main entry points for feature X?”
  • “What assumptions does this service make about data shape and failure modes?”
  • “List the top five risks if we change this dependency.”

Ask for structured output: bullet lists, numbered plans, explicit “open questions.” Treat the reply as a first draft of a research note, not authority. Then verify: open the files it cited, run the app, read one level deeper than the summary.

Agents shine when they can traverse a repo (finding callers, configs, and tests) faster than you could on day one. Your job is to catch hallucinated paths and add constraints the model can’t infer (“we must stay on Node 18,” “no new paid APIs,” “release is Thursday”).

A planning session still needs your input

A good planning session with AI looks like dialogue, not a single mega-prompt:

  1. Goal – You state the outcome and non-negotiables (latency, security, scope).
  2. Exploration – The agent (or you with tool-assisted search) maps the terrain.
  3. Options – You ask for 2–3 approaches with tradeoffs, not one “best” answer.
  4. DecisionYou pick the approach; the model refines the plan to match.
  5. Checklist – Turn the plan into testable steps: migrations, flags, rollback.

If you skip your own constraints, you get elegant plans that ignore reality. The effective pattern is human-owned intent, AI-assisted discovery and drafting.

Test: where trust becomes evidence

Agents can suggest tests; you decide what “done” means. After a change:

  • Run automated tests and add the smallest test that would have caught a real mistake.
  • For risky paths, prefer characterization tests or integration checks over only trusting the happy path.
  • When the domain is fuzzy, ask the model: “What scenarios did we not cover?” then treat the answer as a test backlog, not gospel.

Testing is the bridge between “sounds right” and “we know what we broke.”

Deploy: same discipline, faster loops

Deployment doesn’t change because AI wrote part of the diff. You still want:

  • Small, reviewable changes when possible.
  • Staging or preview environments for anything user-facing.
  • Monitoring and rollback assumptions stated explicitly in the plan.

Agentic tooling can help draft runbooks or migration steps; you align them with how your team actually ships.

A compact workflow

  1. Learn – Use AI to summarize and navigate the unknown; verify against the repo and docs.
  2. Plan – Co-author a short plan with options; you choose tradeoffs.
  3. Implement – Use autocomplete or agents for speed; keep diffs reviewable.
  4. Test – Prove behavior; extend coverage where risk is high.
  5. Deploy – Ship with the same gates you’d use without AI.

Moving beyond autocomplete isn’t about letting software replace your judgment. It’s about letting it accelerate the loop from “I don’t understand this yet” to “I have a tested change in production.” The center of gravity stays you: goals, constraints, and the decision to ship.
